Building the Business
I remember the very first rime I experienced a
darkroom. The pungent smell of the chemicals
made me lightheaded. The anticipation as my
photo started to appear under the red lights
was so thrilling! I was giddy to see something I
had envisioned and created come to life. It was
immediate—I was in love.
It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact moment
when my photography hobby became a busi-
ness; I guess it was when I started getting paid.
It seemed surreal that someone was paying me
to do what I loved! The leap from passion to
profit can be a big one, especially if we don’t
have a business background. That is why it’s so
important to have a plan. Let’s face it, no one
really wants to be a starving artist.
My business background isn’t based in the
halls of a university; rather, it came from the
school of hard knocks. I had a serial entrepre-
neur for a father, but genetic disposition isn’t a
requirement for business success. I believe if you
have the nose to sniff out an opportunity, the
guts to give it a go, and a passion for what you
do, you’re golden. Do what makes you happy!
